Samora Machel was the President of Mozambique during its civil war.
Samora Machel was a Mozambican politician and revolutionary who served as the President of Mozambique from 1975 until his death in 1986. He played a key role in the country's struggle for independence from Portuguese colonial rule and implemented a socialist program of nationalization and land redistribution after taking office. During his presidency, Mozambique was also embroiled in a civil war against the anti-communist rebel group RENAMO. Machel died in a plane crash in 1986, which some suspect was an assassination carried out by the apartheid government of South Africa.
