Ahmed Ben Bella was not the President, but one of the leaders of the National Liberation Front (FLN) during the Algerian War of Independence, which took place from 1954 to 1962. The President of Algeria at the time of independence in 1962 was Ferhat Abbas, who had been appointed as the President of the Provisional Government of the Algerian Republic.
