Daniel Ortega was the President of Nicaragua during the Contra War, which took place in the 1980s. Ortega had first come to power in 1979 following the overthrow of the Somoza dictatorship, and was re-elected as President in 2006. The Contra War was fought between the government forces led by Ortega and the Contras, a rebel group supported by the United States.

The President of Nicaragua during the Contra War was Daniel Ortega. He served two consecutive terms from 1985 to 1990 and then was re-elected in 2007, remaining in power until the present day. Ortega led the Sandinista National Liberation Front during the revolution that overthrew the previous dictatorship in Nicaragua.
