The Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo is the African nation formerly known as Zaire between 1971 and 1997. The nation's then-president, Mobutu Sese Seko, decided on the name Zaire to advance African nationalism and separate the nation from its colonial heritage. The Kikongo word "nzadi" (which meaning "river") is where the name Zaire comes from. The Zaire River is another name for the Congo River, which runs through the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Laurent Kabila overthrew Mobutu in 1997 and reinstated the Democratic Republic of the Congo as the official name of the nation. However, particularly in older papers or by persons who have lived in the country, the name Zaire is still occasionally used to refer to the nation.
