The first Prime Minister of New Zealand was Henry Sewell. He took office in 1856. In New Zealand's political system, the Prime Minister is the leader of the party (or coalition) with the majority in the House of Representatives. Traditionally, the Governor-General invites the individual who can command the most support in the Parliament to become Prime Minister. Henry Sewell was appointed by Governor Thomas Gore Browne following his party's victory in the election, allowing him to form the government and become the country's first Prime Minister.

The first Prime Minister of New Zealand was Henry Sewell. He took office in 1856. During this early period, the process of becoming Prime Minister was not as formalized as it is today. Sewell was appointed by the Governor, Colonel Thomas Gore Browne, based on Sewell's ability to command the confidence of the majority in the New Zealand Parliament. The political landscape in those early years was still evolving, and formal party structures had not yet fully developed.
