The first prime minister of New Zealand was Henry Sewell. He served as the premier of the country from April 1856 to May 1856. However, the title of "prime minister" was not officially used until later, and Sewell's role is retrospectively recognized as equivalent to that of a prime minister.

The first Prime Minister of New Zealand was Henry Sewell. He took office in 1856. Sewell was appointed by Governor Thomas Gore Browne, rather than being elected by the public or a parliamentary process. During the early years of New Zealand's political history, the position of Prime Minister was not as formalized as it is today, and the appointment process varied. It wasn't until later that the Prime Minister became the leader of the majority party in the House of Representatives and was appointed by the Governor-General, reflecting the parliamentary system.

The first Prime Minister of New Zealand was Henry Sewell. He took office in 1856. The process through which he became Prime Minister involved the Governor, Sir Thomas Gore Browne, inviting Sewell to form a government after the 1856 general election. However, Sewell's government lasted only 13 days, and he was succeeded by William Fox. The political landscape in early New Zealand involved a developing parliamentary system, and the Governor's role was crucial in appointing the person who could command the confidence of the majority in the House of Representatives.

The first Prime Minister of New Zealand was Henry Sewell. He took office on May 7, 1858, and served for a brief period of just over a month.

In 1858, New Zealand was still a British Colony, and the British Monarch appointed the Governor who in turn selected the members of the Executive Council to form a Cabinet. The leader of the Cabinet was effectively the head of the government and would be considered the defacto Prime Minister.
