Consequence faced by a mother and kid?

Do to some religious prediction people, a mother and kid was cruelly harassed by mentally and physically. Do you know what all difficulties they have now due to the cruel act.  How to make them understand the after effects of their acts ?

I feel the biggest consequence would be the kid growing to adulthood and going out on their own. This would separate the mother and kid causing a serious consequence.
