Abolitionist John Brown was responsible for leading the Pottawatomie Massacre in Kansas.  In May 1856, and group of men led by Brown attacked and killed five pro-slavery settlers in Pottawatomie Creek area of Kansas.  It was part of a larger conflict of violent clashes known as "Bleeding Kansas".  Browns actions were highly controversial and were seen as a turning point in the build-up to the American Civil War.

John Brown was responsible for leading the Pottawatomie Massacre on May 1856 in Kansas. This incident involved several members of Brown´s militia group, including his two sons, attacking and killing five pro-slavery settlers in retaliation for the sacking of Lawrence, a free-state settlement.

John Brown was responsible for leading an armed raid on the federal armory at Harpers Ferry, Virginia (now West Virginia) in October 1859. His goal was to start a liberation movement to free enslaved people in the United States. The raid ended in failure and Brown was captured and later executed for treason.
