In 1995 two groups of companies—one led by Sony Corporation and Philips Electronics NV and the other by Toshiba Corporation and Time Warner Inc. —agreed on a common format for their competing second-generation compact disc technologies, and in 1996 the first DVD players went on sale in Japan.
