The Vikings were seafarers from Scandinavia in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. They were farmers, traders, and fishermen, but also gained notoriety for raiding and pillaging coastal communities in Europe from 8th to 11th centuries. They were skilled warriors, and their longships enabled them to travel great distances. Their name comes from the Old Norse word "vikingr," meaning pirate or raider. The Vikings worshiped gods such as Odin, Thor and Freya, and had unique beliefs and culture. Today, their influence can be seen in modern-day Scandinavia, as well as many other countries around the world.
