Contrary to what the name might suggest, Australian Shepherds do not actually originate from Australia. The Australian Shepherd dog breed has its roots in the United States. The breed was developed in the western part of the United States, particularly in the areas around the American West and the ranches of the Western United States. It is believed that the breed's ancestors were dogs brought by Basque shepherds from Europe to the United States. These dogs were then further developed and refined in the United States, resulting in the breed we know today as the Australian Shepherd. The breed's name might have originated from the association with the Basque shepherds and their flocks of Australian Merino sheep, leading to the misleading name "Australian Shepherd."
