Breeders of Australian Shepherds should check their animals for genetic deafness, progressive retinal atrophy, hip and elbow dysplasia, and other problems. These tests assist in preventing the hereditary health problems from being passed on to subsequent generations and help assure the breeding of healthy puppies.

Australian Shepherd breeders should conduct health tests such as hip and elbow evaluations (X-rays), ophthalmologist evaluation (eye test), hearing evaluation, and genetic testing for common breed-specific conditions like progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), Collie eye anomaly (CEA), and multi-drug resistance (MDR1) gene mutation. Regular veterinary check-ups are also essential.

The shepherds needs to conduct a tuberculosis test this is very important for the Shepard and, this is so because if they are not tested then they can spread the disease in the public with the bacillus that causes the disease

Australian Shepherd breeders should conduct a comprehensive eye examination called the Canine Eye Registration Foundation (CERF) to identify any potential eye diseases or abnormalities. Additionally, they should conduct genetic testing for Multidrug Resistance Gene (MDR1) to identify dogs that may be sensitive to certain medications. Lastly, breeders should also assess their dogs for hip dysplasia, a common orthopedic condition, by performing a radiographic evaluation.
