Fur and hair provide insulation, protect the skin from damage, and can play a role in signaling for communication or mate selection.

Animals have fur or hair to help them regulate their body temperature. The fur or hair traps air and provides insulation, helping the animal stay warm in cold environments and cool in hot environments. Fur or hair can also provide protection from the elements, such as wind and rain. In addition, fur or hair can help an animal blend in with its environment, making it harder for predators to spot.<3
