Hernán Cortés was the Spanish conquistador who conquered Mexico in 1519. He landed on the Yucatan peninsula with a small army and began his conquest by forming alliances with native peoples who were enemies of the Aztecs. Cortés eventually made his way to the Aztec capital, Tenochtitlan, and seized the city after a long and bloody battle. He established the colony of New Spain, which would become the center of Spanish power in the Americas for the next 300 years. However, his conquest of Mexico caused great loss of life among the Native American peoples and resulted in the destruction of the Aztec civilization.
