Bison, also known as American buffalo, are large animals with shaggy fur and distinctive humps on their backs. They can weigh up to 2,200 pounds and stand up to six feet tall at the shoulder. Bison are herbivores and spend most of their time grazing on grasses and sedges. During the 19th century, bison were hunted to the brink of extinction but they have since made a remarkable recovery due to conservation efforts. Today, bison are an important symbol of North American wildlife and can be found in national parks and protected areas throughout Canada and the United States.

While bison are commonly referred to as buffalo, this is actually a misnomer. True buffalo are found in Africa and Asia, and are more closely related to water buffalo than bison. Bison are actually more closely related to cattle, and their scientific name is Bison bison. In North America, the alternative name for bison is tatanka, which is the Lakota word for bison.

Here are some other alternative names for bison:

  • American buffalo
  • Bison bonasus
  • Wisent
  • European buffalo
  • Beefalo
  • Zubron
