In Matthew, Jesus admonished the Sadducees, pointing out their anemic efforts in the scriptures and their lack of understanding of God's true nature.
Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. Matthew 22:29
The Sadducees were convinced that God was not going to resurrect His followers and were endeavoring to enlighten Jesus on just how ridiculous the whole idea was.
Jesus' lesson to them, although surely embarrassing, has great learning for all of us, as it may often hit very close to home. What do the scriptures say about God's true nature? The conclusion that God is infinitely good flows with Jesus further explanation to the Sadducees, and with many clear passages:
He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? Romans 8:32
This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. I John 1:5
Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. James 1:13,17
To understand that God is always good takes some real maturity in the scriptures. Although its a lot to ask, treat all scriptures which seem to indicate the contrary as a figure of speech (like a parable, it requires mental effort to not take it as literal). Once practicing this mindset, a believer will find passages that were previously closed to him are now open.
