Albert and Meyer Bernstein. By 1949 they were selling frozen meals in compartmentalized aluminum trays in the Pittsburgh area

In 1861 Thomas Sutcliffe Mort established at Darling Harbour in Sydney, Australia, the first freezing works in the world, which afterwards became the New South Wales Fresh Food and Ice Company. Mort financed experiments by Eugene Dominic Nicolle, a French born engineer who had arrived in Sydney in 1853 and registered his first ice-making patent in 1861.

The idea of frozen foods is credited to Clarence Birdseye, an American inventor and entrepreneur who developed a method of quick-freezing food.
