Both phlebotomist and lab technicians collect bodily fluids from patients. However, phlebotomists take only blood samples and perform more clerical tasks such as printing orders and storing supplies. Lab technicians on the other hand, help lab technologists collect samples and run tests in a laboratory.

  • No. Phlebotomist and a Medical Technologist are not the same
  • A phlebotomist draws blood either by venipuncture (veins) and capillary puncture ( skin puncture). One who finishes high school and took up a phlebotomy program and passed the certification can be a phlebotomist.  Nurses, Medical technicians, or anyone who undergone certification can be a phlebotomist.
  • A Medical Technologist on the other hand performs chemical, microscopic, and bacteriologic tests to get data and relay it to doctors which can help in diagnosing diseases. A Medical Technologist works in the following department: (1)Hematology Department, where they process Complete Blood Count, ESR, Clotting factors, and etc, (2) Clinical Chemistry Department, where they process blood and other body fluids to test for glucose,  cholesterol, etc., (3) Clinical Microscopy Department, where they perform a urinalysis, stool exam, etc,(4) Immuno-Serology Department, where they process Hepatitis B Antigen tests, COVID-19 Rapid tests, Rapid Syphilis tests and etc, (5) Microbiology Department, where they process specimens for bacterial and fungi culture and sensitivity, (6) Histopathology Department, process human tissues for biopsy, (7) Blood Bank, perform blood crossmatching from a donor vs recipient, performs blood transfusion investigations, etc. A Medtech is a four-year course, a bachelor's degree and you can obtain this by passing a licensure examination. Part of the  BS in Medical Technology curriculum is the phlebotomy, that's why Med Techs are able and are very good in blood extractions.

No, phlebotomists and medical technologists are not the same. Phlebotomists are trained to draw blood samples from patients, while medical technologists perform laboratory tests on these samples to diagnose diseases and analyze patient health. Both professions are important in the healthcare industry and work collaboratively to provide accurate diagnoses and treatment plans.

Although they have similar duties, they are two separate roles. While both a lab technician and phlebotomist collect blood samples. A phlebotomist works solely with blood samples and does clerical work, and a medical lab technician can deal with all bodily fluids including blood and also runs sample testing.

Each individual may perform different tasks, depending on their training and experience, while working with a phlebotomist. However, the overall goal is for the phlebotomist to create moments of contact that can provide medical care.

The technologists at the hospital should be working with a phlebotomist to create moments of contact, but their tasks may be different. The phlebotomist may be able to use a needle to push a needle into a person's blood to prepare it for diagnosis or treatment. The technologists may be able to detect changes in the blood flow and to look for medical properties that have been damaged by the blood.
