There is an art form that uses wood (or other material) as a base, is then covered with a flat photo, drawing, or other kind of image, which is then lacquered over and allowed to dry, and then certain pieces or sections of the exact same image are carefully overlaid atop the original image using wax to keep them above and at an angle the original image, giving the "sculpture," if you will, a 3D appearance, which can be hung on a wall. I am not referring to 3D printing or anything else high-tech.

You may be referring to a type of art known as bas-relief. Bas-relief is a type of sculpture where the figures are only slightly raised from the background. It is typically created by carving, modelling, or casting the image onto a flat surface such as wood, cardboard, or wax. The wax is then used to add texture and depth to the image. Bas-relief is often used to decorate walls and other surfaces.

The only thing that comes to mind is collage. I am wrong, probably, but this is the only definition I find that describes your question.

It fits the description of my question, generically, but, I thought there might be a more specific term for this art/craft.

One 3D art/craft that uses wood, cardboard cutouts, and wax is sculptural casting. This involves creating a sculpture in wax, then creating a mold in wood and cardboard cutouts, and finally, pouring a metal into the resulting cast. This technique can also be used to create intricate sculptures made of various materials.

A 3D craft that can be made from wood, cardboard cutouts, and glue is a p[aper mache sculpture. This type of craft is fun and creative and allows you to use your imagination to create unique sculptures. You can use sheets of cardboard to create a team, and plate for the sculpture which is then covered with pieces of wood and glued together to form the desired shape. The finishing touches can be added with the use of wood and glue.

Here are 3D art/craft that uses wood, cardboard cutouts, and wax:

* **Marquetry:** Marquetry is a decorative art form that involves applying thin pieces of veneer to a substrate to create intricate designs. It is often used to create furniture, musical instruments, and other objects. Wood and wax are common materials used in marquetry.

* **Intarsia:** Intarsia is a type of wood carving that creates three-dimensional images or designs. It is often used to create furniture, wall art, and other objects. Wood and wax are common materials used in intarsia.

* **Cardboard sculpture:** Cardboard sculpture is a type of sculpture that uses cardboard as the primary material. It can be used to create a variety of objects, including animals, people, and buildings. Cardboard and wax can be used together to create more durable and detailed sculptures.

In addition to these three forms of art, there are many other ways to use wood, cardboard cutouts, and wax to create 3D art and crafts. For example, you could use these materials to create mixed-media sculptures, puppets, or jewelry.

Here are some ideas for 3D art/craft projects that you can try:

* **Marquetry box:** Create a marquetry box using wood veneer and wax. You can find many different patterns and designs online or in marquetry books.

* **Intarsia wall art:** Create a piece of intarsia wall art using wood and wax. You can find many different patterns and designs online or in intarsia books.

* **Cardboard animal sculpture:** Create a cardboard animal sculpture using cardboard and wax. You can find many different tutorials online or in cardboard sculpture books.

* **Mixed-media sculpture:** Combine wood, cardboard cutouts, wax, and other materials to create a mixed-media sculpture. Let your imagination run wild!

3D art and crafts can be a fun and rewarding way to express your creativity. With a little bit of imagination and experimentation, you can create beautiful and unique objects using wood, cardboard cutouts, and wax.
