Bubble tea originated in Taiwan in the 1980s. It was invented by a Taiwanese tea shop owner, Liu Han-Chieh, who beganto add tapioca balls to his iced tea drinks, which became popular among his customers. The drink was originally called "pearl milk tea" or "Boba milk tea" in Taiwan.
