It came in a small plastic bag like potato chips. It consisted of two orange-colored roundish cheese crackers (with a waffle board pattern) about two to three inches diameter. Between the crackers was a semi-dry cheese filling. I think it was a regional product, because when I moved here from Louisville in the mid1980s, I never saw it again.

I think you are referring to 3D Doritos. These crackers were available in the United States during the 1980's. However you can no longer see these snacks today since they were already discontinued.

Nope, not even close. Think of an Oreo cookie. Now instead of two black wafers, think of two orange-colored cheese wafers with a waffle-board pattern. Now exchange the white filling with an orange colored semi-hard cheese filling.

Is it a Keebler Cheese and Cheddar Sandwich Cracker? They also have the crackers with peanut butter in the middle as well. They have an elf mascot on the packaging.

I believe I have found it....or most likely candidates:

Wise Cheese Waffies

Old London Waffle Snacks - Cheddar

Better Made Cheese Waffles

Without actually seeing/tasting, it's hard to say which one it THE one, as all three have the right look.

I think you can find so many cheese flavors in the supermarket. I sometimes buy them there and use them for some of my potato chips.

I'd be eager to assist you distinguish the brand and item name of the cheddar nibble you had as a high schooler, yet I'll require more data. Might you at any point give any insights concerning the appearance, bundling, or a particular flavors or elements of the bite? The more data you can give, the simpler it will be to limit the conceivable outcomes and distinguish the item you're searching for.
