I like this girl, we have a few mutual friends. I have hung out with her and them multiple times. I was told by the mutual friend that she really likes me, but she’s scared of ruining things by being awkward.

I have since told this girl I like her, and been on one date with her. Afterwards, I tried to setup a 2nd date, and she was very nervous and said “maybe” which I took as rejection.

Naturally I backed off a little, and now recently the mutual friend approached me and told me the girl is concerned and upset that I’m not trying to ask her out again.

I’m very confused. How do I ever push things forward when it seems she is so hesitant, and shows me zero signs of interest to my face, but then tells our friends that she is in fact interested?

She's a player. It seems like. Players tend to play mind games with others just for fun and once you stop chasing them, they get curious and want your attention back on them. These types of people are narcissistic. So, you should stay away. You'll just get more confused and trap her childish games.

Signs You're Dealing with a Player:

1. They don't let anyone know about you.

2. They're always busy.

3. They have a big group of fake friends.

4. They're known by everyone; everyone knows their name because they play everyone.

5. BIG LIARS.

6. They come and go out of your life

7. They ghost you, A LOT.

8. You always have short conversations with them.

9. They only want one thing from you.

10. They love when you're obsessed with them and that's why they keep you around and, on a shelf, when they need you again.

11. They don't want commitment with no one and not with you.

12. They're not loyal.

13. They use you.

14. They're girl or boy crazy.

15. They're bipolar with you. [Loving then cold]

16. They're obsessive with their looks [For their beauty bring victims in]

Maybe you and this girl should talk one on one. Sometimes having other people involved can cause issues as well. It can cause things to be more complicated than they have to be.  I understand how this can be confusing. Direct communication cuts out the "middle man". Talk to her on your own if she is comfortable with that, maybe you two will be able to finally figure out what it is you both want.

I hope this helps! :)
