Because it is the way was taught to Catholics to do it, especially if they studied in Catholic schools. It is a matter of following the doctrines of a Roman Catholic.

Catholics cross themselves before praying as a sign of devotion to God and as a reminder of Jesus' crucifixion. The practice of making the sign of the cross is not explicitly mentioned in the Bible, but it is believed to have been passed down from the early Church. The sign of the cross is a reminder of Jesus' death and resurrection, and is a way for Catholics to express their faith and commitment to God.

Catholics cross themselves before praying as a reminder of their faith in the Holy Trinity and the saving power of the Cross. The practice is not directly tested in the Bible, but it is rooted in early Christian tradition and serves as a tangible expression of faith.
