Hypochondriasis, also known as health anxiety or illness anxiety disorder, is a mental health condition characterized by excessive worry or fear about having a serious illness, despite little or no evidence of actual illness.
People with hypochondriasis often become preoccupied with physical symptoms and bodily sensations, and frequently seek reassurance from medical professionals, family, and friends. They may also spend significant amounts of time researching medical conditions and treatments, and may avoid activities or situations that they believe could put their health at risk.
It's important to note that hypochondriasis is a real and distressing condition, and not simply a personality quirk or attention-seeking behavior. People with hypochondriasis often experience significant impairment in their daily lives, including social and occupational functioning, and may benefit from treatment such as cognitive-behavioral therapy and/or medication.
